The fiery realm of Muspelheim returns in God of War Ragnarok, bringing with it a brutal series of combat challenges known as The Crucible. Clearing these trials earns you exclusive materials to craft the game‘s most powerful equipment, making it well worth the pain.
In this guide, I‘ll walk you through everything you need to access The Crucible, defeat its challenges, and claim your rewards.
How to Unlock Muspelheim and The Crucible
To reach Muspelheim, you first need to collect both halves of the Muspelheim Seed.
The first seed half is found in a legendary chest during the "In Service of Asgard" favor. This unlocks after meeting the spirit Hrist in the Bay of Bounty. Scale the cliff next to the Mystic Gateway by the shipwreck to find it.
To get the second seed half, you must progress to the "Forging Destiny" main story quest. This unlocks the Dragon Beach area. There‘s a crawlspace by the southern Dwarf statue leading to Alberich Hollow. Destroy the debris inside with a Fire Bomb, then open the legendary chest.
With both seed halves, Muspelheim will unlock at any Mystic Gateway. Head there and speak to Surtr to begin The Crucible.
Muspelheim Combat Trials
The Crucible consists of 6 intro trials, with exclusive crafting materials and armor pieces as rewards:
- Population Control – Kill enemies while keeping the number below 4
- King of the Hill – Kill enemies entering designated zones
- Weapon Mastery – Defeat waves using all your skills
- Flawless Trial – Don‘t take damage while killing 15 foes
- Ring Out – Knock 21 enemies into lava pits
- Feed the Rift – Throw orbs through realm tears

The Final Crucible Challenges
A sword in the arena signals 6 new hardcore trials. You‘ll need to beat 1 specific intro trial to unlock each one.
The combinations are:
- Rampage + Health Steal = Endurance
- Health Steal + Rampage = Ring of Fire
- Kill Fuse + Health Steal = Boss Rush
- Kill Fuse + Rampage = Phantom
- Rampage + Kill Fuse = Shield Breaker
- Health Steal + Kill Fuse = Onslaught
These each reward rare crafting materials and pieces of the elite Surtr‘s Scorched Armor Set.
Secret Valkyrie Boss
Once you‘ve beaten every Crucible challenge, there‘s one final foe lurking nearby.
Drop down through the opening south of the arena to find a hidden cliffside battleground. This is where you‘ll face Gna, Queen of the Valkyries.
Defeating her nets big XP gains, the Shield Rond of Obliteration heavy runic attack, and materials to craft the Queen‘s Sacrifice armor set.
Muspelheim Crafting Materials
Completing The Crucible challenges earns various rare crafting materials unique to Muspelheim:
- Smoldering Embers – Increase Permafrost power
- Blazing Embers – Increase Immolation power
- Glowing Embers – Increase Maelstrom power
- Divine Ashes – General crafting material
You can then spend these resources at Brok and Sindri‘s shops to upgrade your most powerful gear.
