Final Fantasy 16 Green Currency Guide: How to Earn and Spend Renown from a FF Veteran

Fantasy forest

As a long-time Final Fantasy fan who has played every numbered entry since VII, I‘ve amassed plenty of experience with these games‘ progression systems. And in FF16, the aptly named "Renown" currency is vital for building up your party‘s strength.

After pouring over 50+ hours into my playthrough, I‘ve become well acquainted with optimizing my Renown income to access the best gear and upgrades. So in this guide, I‘ll be breaking down everything you need to know about earning, spending, and farming Renown efficiently.

What is Renown and Why Does it Matter?

Simply put, Renown allows you to purchase potential. It‘s the currency for unlocking combos, stat boosts, abilities, rare equipment, and more for your party members.

  • Without enough Renown, your characters will be weak, unable to wield powerful gear, and severely lacking in combat options.
  • With ample Renown, you can elevate your team to demigod-like heights of strength to crush every foe in your path.

So if you want to experience everything FF16 has to offer, from secret superbosses to the dramatic story finale, investing in Renown is 100% necessary.

And as an experienced FF player, I cannot recommend stockpiling Renown highly enough, especially for upgrading your Eikons. Their elemental abilities and summons can easily win battles that might otherwise seem impossible at your level.

Now let‘s get into the specifics of building up your own mountain of wonderful green…

Detailed Breakdown: How to Earn Renown

While the story quests themselves provide a decent chunk, to really amass a fortune you‘ll need to branch out. Here are the most lucrative ways to pad your coffers:

Complete Side Quests

Nearly every side quest rewards 200-500 Renown upon finishing. And there are LOTS of them – over 50 by the second arc alone.

While simplistic, these short adventures with minor characters still pay well for the time commitment. I found even mundane fetch quests for items like "Prickly Pear" netted a nice 300 Renown.

So I recommend clearing out ALL available side content before advancing the story. Consider it an investment that pays immediate dividends.

Farm Repeatable Hunts

A bit into Act 2, completing the "Storm‘s Conclusion" main quest unlocks repeatable monster hunts. These pit you against uniquely powerful foes in exchange for massive Renown payouts.

The early hunts reward ~750 Renown each, while late game marks can pay 1500-1650 per clear!

By repeatedly clearing hunts, you can amass Renown extremely quickly. It does require skill to defeat these tough enemies though. Bring your A-game!

Gather Blue Crystals

Keep an eye out while exploring for blue crystals. Each one contains 50 Renown that respawns frequently, so they provide a steady, reliable income.

I typically net an extra 500-1000 Renown per play session just from crystal harvesting on my travels. It adds up!

Complete Renown Talent Nodes

In your Ascension grids, unlocking Renown talents boosts income by 5-15% per applicable content type (hunts, quests, crystals, etc).

Maxing out these nodes made a very noticeable difference in my average Renown per hour played. They are ABSOLUTELY worth investing in early.

Income Summary Tables

To demonstrate potential Renown yields, here is the average income I received from each activity up to Chapter 3 in my playthrough:

Average Side Quest Income

Fantasy book

Quest TypeAverage Renown
Story Quests1200 per
Side Quests350 per
Hunts950 per
Blue Crystals50 each (avg 30 per session)

As shown above, side quests alone earned me over 17,500 extra Renown by Chapter 3!

Cumulative Earnings Per Chapter

Chapter 18,250
Chapter 216,900
Chapter 331,150

As you can see, the Renown comes in waves if you explore thoroughly and take advantage of all available hunts and side quests.

Now let‘s look at the coveted spoils you can purchase with this fortune…

Top Renown Purchases at Patron‘s Whisper

Patron‘s Whisper is a secret shop unlocked partway through the story. It exclusively offers rare gear and items in exchange for Renown.

Based on cost-to–performance ratio, here are the best uses for Renown:

Character Growth Unlocks

I cannot recommend prioritizing progression unlocks enough. Specific abilities or weapon types for a character can fundamentally change how they play.

For example, spending 4500 Renown to unlock Greatswords for Clive enhanced his damage output by nearly 40% compared to his starting loadout.

Similar upgrades provide either wholly unique abilities or dramatic stat improvements. So put progression first!

Glowing crystal

Meteorites – 55 Renown Each

While gear takes priority early on due to immediate benefits, you‘ll eventually need Meteorites for upgrading equipment.

These rare crafting components are required in great numbers to improve weapons and accessories past level 5.

As the ONLY way to amass them is Patron‘s Whisper at 55 Renown apiece, I made a habit of always buying out the shop‘s stock.

By end game, the hundreds I‘d purchased allowed finishing touches on my loadout that otherwise would have been impossible.

So even if you plan to save up for gear, snagging Meteorites whenever possible is ideal. At under 100 Renown for a pair, it‘s easy to fit into any budget!

Weapons Over Armor Early On

When prioritizing gear purchases, analyze their unique effects and benefits rather than just statistical improvements.

For example, the earliest armor available grants only minor defense/resistance boosts over story rewards. But accessories like Genji Gloves adding substantial damage passives or new abilities create immediate tangible improvements.

So especially if low on Renown, grab weapons first for their game-changing combat effects rather than incremental defense increases from helmets. Those can come later!

Best Early Game Gear Buys

Based on benefits unlocked compared to asking price, here is the best gear available for under 6000 Renown:

Glowing crystal

ItemPriceBenefit
Genji Gloves236520% Damage Increase
Meteorite x2100Key Crafting Material
Ring of the Swiftshot1965+10% Attack Speed
Talisman of Priming1360Fire Damage +20%

As you can see, just 6000 Renown can get you EXTREMELY good gear that dramatically improves combat performance.

Once you‘ve bought these out, feel free to save up for pricier late-game outfitting!

Optimized Renown Farming Route

If you‘re looking to build a big Renown stockpile quickly, follow this route that I‘ve honed across my multiple playthroughs:

Early Game (Chapter 1-3)

  1. Clear all side quests in current areas
  2. Complete any unlocked Renown Talent nodes
  3. Repeat early hunts as they unlock after Ch. 1
  4. Gather all crystals during travels

This setup nets over 3000 Renown per hour and unlocks shop gear faster.

Mid Game (Chapter 4-7)

  1. Clear ALL available side quests
  2. Purchase Meteorites when shop is unlocked after Ch. 5
  3. Repeat hunts whenever they refresh (prioritize high value targets)
  4. Activate all Renown talents
  5. Gather crystals

With more quests and higher hunt Renown, income jumps to 5000+ per hour.

Late Game (Chapter 8+)

  1. Finish remaining quests
  2. Farm repeatable high value hunts
  3. Fully upgrade gear with stockpiled Meteorites
  4. Enjoy steamrolling end game content!

At this point, focus narrows to prep for the finale. But you should already have PLENTY to dominate!

While not the only path, I‘ve found this optimize progression pace and gold income across all my playthroughs. Give it a shot and let me know how your fortune grows!

Closing Tips on Maximizing Renown

If you take anything away from this guide, let it be this:

  • Renown is everything – don‘t neglect earning/spending it!
  • Rush side quests and talent nodes to amplify income
  • Funnel Renown into progression before items
  • Snag Meteorites whenever possible, even if saving up
  • Analyze unique gear effects over just stats

Follow these principles while regularly clearing hunts and crystals, and you‘ll amass enough Renown to steamroll FF16 with maxed out Eikons and top-tier outfits.

I hope this guide serves you well on your journey to becoming Rosaria‘s savior! Let me know if you have any other questions on optimizing this vital progression system. For the fate of the realm!
