Fallout 76 Legendary Module: The Ultimate Guide (2023)

Fallout 76 player in power armor

As a passionate Fallout 76 player with over 500 hours since launch, legendary gear is my endgame obsession. The only way to craft weapons and armor capable of dominating the Wasteland‘s toughest foes is with the precious legendary module.

But what are legendary modules exactly? Where do you find them? And how many will you need to perfect every gear slot? I‘ve compiled this comprehensive guide so fellow wasteland wanderers can also unlock legendaries’ immense power.

What Are Legendary Modules In Fallout 76

Legendary modules are rare crafting components required for creating and upgrading high-level legendary equipment. They allow turning normal gear into far superior versions with randomly generated special effects – essentially buffing items immensely.

Some examples of bonus effects from legendary gear:

  • Weapons: Explosive damage, 50% more critical damage, Ignores 30% armor, etc.
  • Armor: Increased AP regen, Better sneak, Damage resistance bonuses, etc.

Legendary gear leans into more advanced builds with specific damage types, stealth tactics, and leaner/tankier survival strategies. You’ll focus gameplay around weapon synergy and stacking armor effects for almost comical levels of power over standard equipment – essential for handling post-game challenges solo or in groups.

But this gear doesn’t come easy. So let’s break down everything you need to know about obtaining those precious modules!

Legendary Module Uses – Why You Need Them

Before we get into locating modules, what do you even use them for? Here are all the important legendary module applications:

Re-Rolling Purveyor Legendaries

Murmrgh’s Purveyor shop allows buying random legendary weapons and armor in exchange for a grinding currency called scrip (more details later). Her inventory potential is incredibly wide – but unfocused random rolls usually generate useless legendaries for most player builds.

  • However, you can spend modules to re-roll the Purveyor’s dropped gear into something better, consuming 1 module for weapons, 2 for armor.
  • Each re-roll generates different random bonuses more aligned to your needs, incrementally increasing power.
  • With enough rolls, you can convert something mediocre like a 1-star wood armor piece to a perfect 3-star set matching your playstyle.

Crafting Secret Service Armor

The invaluable Secret Service armor has outstanding resistances and defense stats. And it’s uniquely compatible with actual legendary effects that improve those resistances further or add helpful utility bonuses.

  • It takes the standard crafting materials plus 1 legendary module per armor piece to create Secret Service gear from scratch.
  • So a full matched set will cost 5 modules minimum.

Further Upgrading Secret Service Armor

Not only can you craft Secret Service armor with modules initially, but more modules allow re-rolling its effects later.

  • At an Armor Workbench, select Modify on an existing piece you want to improve.
  • Consume a Legendary Core material (dropped from special public events) plus 1 module to re-roll new effects.
  • Repeatedly reroll each armor slot with cores and modules until your gear perfectly complements your build and needed resistances.

Similar upgrading applies to Gauss Shotgun, Gauss Pistol, Gauss Minigun, and other specialized endgame equipment added over time. Modulesenhance their might tremendously as well.

So in summary, you need modules both for crafting certain gear, and repeatedly upgrading rolls. They are the definitive late-game currency for build perfectionists!

Where To Get Legendary Modules

Legendary modules primarily come from a legendary vendor called Purveyor Murmrgh, who exchanges them for "scrip" currency.

  • Scrip is earned by exchanging unused legendary items at Train Station Legendary Exchange Machines.
  • Scrip earnings depend on item star rating – more stars giving more scrip.

For example:

  • 1-star items convert into 5 scrip
  • 2-star items convert into 15 scrip
  • 3-star items convert into a whopping 40 scrip!

Once you’ve stockpiled some scrip, visit Purveyor Murmrgh’s shop either at Berkeley Springs Station or Rusty Pick to exchange it for precious modules. Her current inventory caps at 150 modules per day, costing 50 scrip each.

So with ideal RNG luck farming 3-star legendaries for dismantling, you’d need nearly 4 items a day to buy out her entire MODULE stock. Of course upgrade rerolls means you always need more…

Bottom line, scrip income throttles your module acquisition. The more useless legendaries you clear from your inventory for scrip, the faster you can amass reroll materials and mold godlike gear. Now let‘s discuss how many modules that gear actually demands…

Legendary Module Costs – It’s Expensive!

Creating and upgrading the most powerful legendary equipment that outclasses everything else doesn’t come cheap. Modules are intentionally scarce and grinding for scrip takes serious playtime – so make every module count!

  • 50 scrip per module means hours invested to buy just one re-roll attempt. That can disappear in seconds trying your luck…
  • Even an entire 150 module daystock usually won’t provide enough rerolls to perfect a whole armor loadout or specialized weapon.

To demonstrate, here’s a cost example for upgrading a complete set of Secret Service armor with modules:

  • Initial SS armor crafting: 5 modules minimum
  • Assuming 2 rerolls per piece to get great effects: 10 more modules x 5 armor pieces = 50 modules
  • Total for full perfect set = 55+ modules

And your weaponry needs as much love too – easily another 20+ modules per gun to get an ideal damage-boosting combo.

As you can see, willing your perfect gear setup into existence takes a staggering module investment. The scrip costs stretch into hundreds of legendary items broken for parts, and/or months of grinding if you pace daily module buys.

But this long-term gear enhancement loop is what separates Fallout masters with untouchable builds from everyone else! Are you ready to pay the costs?

Maximizing Legendary Modules – Key Tips

I want to share my top strategies for efficiently investing scarce modules into your best-in-slot gear:

  • Know your build first – Sniper, tank, etc? Without a clear direction you can waste modules on unused gear.
  • Focus on Most Vital Items – Upgrade priority weapons and armor enabling whole build first before niche pieces.
  • Favor offense – Mediocre weapons limit builds more than mediocre armor. Get crucial guns upgraded before defenses.
  • Balance power gains – Don’t obsess too hard over incremental effects once gear is reasonably capable.
  • Sell unused legendaries – Clear inventory for scrip components instead of hoarding dusty old gear.
  • Buy modules daily – Murmgh’s coupled scrip/module limits means pacing spending.

Making noticeable gains involves lots of incremental progress rather than huge leaps. Be patient rerolling effects and gaining scrip from unneeded drops. Over time your perseverance molds incredible builds.

The following table compares the power gains from example legendary weapon and armor effects to guide your upgrade priorities:

Legendary Effect ExamplesPower Level Gain
Explosive Bullet Damage⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
50% More Base Damage⭐⭐⭐⭐
25% Faster Fire Rate⭐⭐⭐
Damage Ignores 10% Armor⭐⭐
+1 Strength Stat
Energy Damage Reduction +25⭐⭐⭐⭐
75% Chance to Reduce Damage by 15%⭐⭐⭐

As you can see, weapon damage multipliers provide massive output, while armor focuses more on damage avoidance – choose priority slots based on your combat weak points.

Now let’s analyze some good builds to complement legendary gear…

Matching Builds to Legendary Effects

While legendary gear supercharges any build, tailoring it to your combat style is crucial.

For example as a sniper:

  • An Instigating gauss rifle with double damage on full health enemies synergizes perfectly with keeping distance.
  • Unyielding armor with SPECIAL stat boosts as health gets low won’t fit at all – I’m never hurt to benefit!

Or for a melee tank:

  • Vampiric weapons leeching health on hit paired with regeneration armor saves you from needing to back off.
  • Cloaking bonuses are mostly useless since stealth contradicts the build.

So before upgrading any old 3-star drop from Murmrgh or enemy spawns, consider if effects actually improve your gameplay.

My favorite Fallout 76 builds making great use of legendary gear:

Commando:

  • Anti-Armor/Furious/Vampiric * Handmades/Fixers
  • Unyielding or Vanguard armor
  • Take critical damage and AP boosting perks

Heavy Gunner:

  • Furious/Vampiric Gatling Plasmas
  • Weapon weight reduction armor
  • Bear Arms and Heavy Gunner perks

Melee Tank

  • Bloodied/Vampiric melee weapons
  • Cavalier/Sentinel armor
  • Ironclad, Barbarian, Blocker defenses

No matter your playstyle, chase the effects enabling it, not generically powerful ones. Synergy is key!

Okay, time to grind – let’s talk getting scrip for modules…

Legendary Module Farming Guide

We’ve established modules are scarce, yet essential. So where and how should we actually play to steadily generate scrip to buy them?

My favorite routine:

White Springs Resort:

Still full of ghouls, featuring great legendary spawn rates and density. Clearing this location never gets old!

  • 30 minutes exploring buildings nets at least 10-15 legendary enemy spawns.
  • Scrap useless drops for scrip between Murmrgh vendor visits.
  • Server hop and repeat for more volume.

Uranium Fever Event:

Mining mole miners have outstanding legendary drop rates, especially during event swarm sizes.

  • Each run spawns 5-8 legendaries, plus completion reward picks.
  • Hop worlds after finishing to rerun immediately.
  • Fast scrip and you’ll learn mining trivia against your will!

Daily Ops:

Bosses guaranteed to drop legendaries, scaled to difficulty. Good source of 2-3 stars for large scrip payouts.

I mix up these along with normal questing to keep the gear upgrades rolling in!

Clearing my first daily legendary exchange cap takes around 2 hours of active grinding. Learn good routes through prime farming spots and it becomes relaxing over time.

Closing Thoughts on Legendary Modules

Hopefully this lengthy guide has prepared fellow Fallout fanatics to better understand the legendary module metagame surrounding god-tier gear.

Recap quick tips:

  • Modules upgrade Purveyor rolls and craft special equipment
  • Visit Purveyor Murmrgh to trade Scrip for modules
  • 50 scrip per module – expensive but essential
  • Upgrade weapons first then defenses next
  • Match legendary effects to your combat style

It’s a long road getting 5 armor pieces and 5 weapons upgraded to their full potential. But the power spike completely refreshes gameplay, build diversity, and endgame viability.
