While Storm Strike and Earthen Bulwark form your one-two punch of single target damage and survivability, Tempest Vortex fills the crucial role of controlling the battlefield against hordes of enemies.

This skill calls down a stationary vortex that heavily slows attack/movement speeds of any foes caught inside. It provides invaluable breathing room against swarms melee attackers via kiting.

Upgrades widen the area of effect for capturing more monsters, along with extending its duration after initially touching down. This enhances the crowd control coverage.

Vortex enables cleanly dispatching packed enemy groups once additional AoE tools come online later. It works wonders for controlling the chaos of campaign fights while leveling.

Support Skill – Oak Skin

  • Upgrades: Enhanced Oak Skin, Hardened Oak Skin
  • Type: Buff
  • Increase personal and ally armor

Oak Skin shares the defensive bonuses of Earthen Bulwark but applies them proactively before combat as opposed to reactively. It hardens you and nearby friends with boosted armor, enhancing durability against physical damage.

The armor gain scales independently with skill rank as opposed to gear. Just a single point provides noticeable dividends early on. Oak Skin bolsters the innate tankiness described previously, further reducing reliance on great items while leveling.

It also benefits partied allies, improving your cooperative support capabilities.

Movement Skill – Falcon Wings

  • Type: Movement
  • Provides short-range teleport mobility

Last but not least, Falcon Wings fills the movement skill slot, offering triple blink charges on a short cooldown. It enables quickly dashing through enemies or crossing gaps.

Mobility is survival – being able to dodge ground hazards or kite dangerous monsters fuels the smooth leveling tempo enabled by this build. Escaping sticky situations with well-timed blinks prevents many deaths.

Vortex gains damage and the Spirit regen fuels more frequent usage. Combined with wider area from its upgrades, Pack Leader allows Vortex to become an excellent source of party support damage too.

Gear Priorities

While skills and passives make up the core of power, finding the right gear to complement them is also important. Here are target stats for equipment when leveling this build:

Weapons

  • Lightning Damage
  • Added Spirit
  • Attack Speed / Cooldown Reduction

Armor

  • Armor / Health
  • Resistances (Fire, Cold, Lightning)
  • Spirit / Second

Jewelry

  • Cooldown Reduction / Resource Cost Reduction

  • Resistances (Poison, Physical)

If possible, try to maintain roughly 2:1 offensive vs defensive stat ratios for smooth play. But when in doubt, go for survivability first until your damage naturally ramps up!

Chain Lightning is excellent for trash clearing but suffers single target. Lightning Storm is unreliable defense requiring enemies stay inside. Both also heavily drain Spirit.

By adopting Earthen Bulwark and passive sustain instead, you trade some AoE for much smoother tankiness and resource economy. This permits reliably tackling campaign content rather than just farming monsters.

Balancing offense and defense better equips you for the more well-rounded challenges of early game zones. The flexibility also leaves room to specialize further once gear comes online.
