Baldur‘s Gate 3 All Companions In-Depth: Stats, Skills, Playstyles & More

As an avid RPG enthusiast with over 200 hours across multiple Baldur’s Gate 3 playthroughs, I’ve adventured with every companion combination imaginable. Recruiting these distinct characters with unique backgrounds, motivations, and abilities remained a highlight each playthrough.

In this extensive guide, I‘ll be sharing my insights on every existing and upcoming Baldur’s Gate 3 companion – including breakdowns of their signature skills, recruitment details, and ideal party dynamics to embrace based on their capabilities.

Overview: Selecting Your BG3 Party

At any given time, your Baldur‘s Gate 3 party can include up to four characters – your customized protagonist plus up to three companions. These companions can interject during quests, banter during travel, provide aid in combat encounters, and open up additional story opportunities.

But companions aren’t just along for the ride – they have clear preferences, motivations, and ideals that influence their reactions. Certain companions may even abandon your party outright or attack if your actions deeply clash with their values.

As such, carefully consider your party configuration based on complementary skills/roles, aligned motivations, and desired interpersonal dynamics. For example:

  • A burly Fighter (Lae’zel), cunning Rogue (Astarion), and elemental Sorcerer (custom player character) form a well-rounded trio handling close quarters, ranged combat, and magic respectively.

  • A sarcastic Outlander Ranger (custom player character) might enjoy joking around with Wildmage Gale‘s eccentric magical antics but often butt heads with rigid soldier Lae’zel over appropriate problem-solving methods.

Now let’s explore how to recruit these companions out in the world and the playstyle opportunities they introduce…

Shadowheart [Cleric|Trickery Domain]

Shadowheart portrait

Race: High Half-Elf
Class: Cleric
Subclass: Trickery Domain

Recruited: Nautiloid Tutorial / Ravaged Beach

With access to both healing magics and deception, Shadowheart operates in moral shades of gray. She can support the party with restoration when needed or subtle charm spells to avoid conflict. Shadowheart also wields stealth magics like Pass Without Trace, helping the party slip past enemies unnoticed.

I found Shadowheart pairs excellently with sneaky Rogues or cunning Rangers who appreciate her guile and mildly dastardly streak. But lawful noble characters may take issue with her dubious tactics and mysterious night goddess allegiances.

Signature Abilities & Spells

  • Invoke Duplicity – Briefly create illusory double to distract enemies
  • Pass Without Trace – Group stealth enhancement
  • Bless – Improve attack rolls and saves

Gale [Wizard|Transmutation School]

Gale portrait

Race: Human
Class: Wizard
School: Transmutation

Recruited: Wrecked Nautiloid beach

The brilliant Gale augmentation his rather frail human form with potent Transmutation magic – empowering himself in combat while debilitating foes. When he transforms into a fire/poison-resistant bear hybrid or enlarges allies in a pinch, you’ll appreciate having his magical brawn.

As a magic-enthused Wizard, Gale worked best when I could activate environmental surfaces with Oil/Water to enable his explosive Evocation spells. Those favoring magical solutions will enjoy Department scholar Gale‘s arcane expertise – though his arrogance could irk more grounded warriors like Wyll.

Signature Abilities & Spells

  • Enlarge/Reduce – Doubles allies‘ size & damage or shrinks enemies
  • Resilient Sphere – Encases ally in protective floating bubble
  • Flaming Sphere – Summons rolling ball of fire that damages enemies

Wyll [Warlock|The Fiend Pact]

Wyll portrait

Race: Human
Class: Warlock
Pact: The Fiend

Recruited: Druid Grove (Northern)

Wyll’s blend of swordplay with Eldritch Blast spells provides versatile offensive potential. His Hellish Rebuke reaction can also punish enemies targeting him. Ideal for characters who enjoy mixing weapons and magic.

But Wyll’s inner turmoil over his demonic pact could conflict with highly principled companions like devout clerics. Providing Wyll opportunities to help others may ease his doubts and unlock warmer interactions.

Signature Abilities & Spells

  • Eldritch Blast – Ranged force bolt attack
  • Hellish Rebuke – Retributive strike against attacker
  • Hex – Applies combat debuffs to target

Lae‘zel [Fighter|Githyanki Soldier]

Lae'zel portrait

Race: Githyanki
Class: Fighter
Background: Soldier

Recruited: Blighted Village Crypts

As a disciplined frontline warrior, Lae’zel excels at drawing enemy aggression thanks to her high AC and health. She also provides single-target lockdown, preventing troublesome mages from escaping melee range.

Pair Lae’zel with ranged damage dealers benefiting from her defenses occupying enemies up-close. Though her brutal honesty and strictly principled tactics could annoy less rigid companions.

Signature Abilities & Equipment

  • Greatsword – Heavy melee damage
  • Shield Equipped – +2 AC
  • Action Surge – Extra action for more attacks
  • Second Wind – Self heal bonus action

Karlach [Barbarian|Asmodeus Tiefling]

Karlach portrait

Race: Asmodeus Tiefling
Class: Barbarian

Recruited: Risen Road River

Karlach overwhelms enemies with relentless brutal strikes empowered by her Barbarian rage. And as a tanky frontliner, she draws attacks away from vulnerable companions.

As a Tiefling, Karlach also innately reshapes flames into Hellish Rebukes against attackers. I suggest pairing her with support characters who can enhance her already-imposing defenses and damage output.

Signature Abilities & Equipment

  • Reckless Attack – Advantage on attacks at cost of also giving enemies advantage
  • Rage damage resistance
  • Maul – Heavy two-handed melee weapon
  • Javelin – Thrown spear

Astarion [Rogue|Vampire Spawn]

Astarion portrait

Race: High Elf
Class: Rogue
Background: Noble

Recruited: Nautiloid Wreckage

Astarion prefers operating unseen – sneak attacking distracted enemies from a distance before vanishing again. His Cunning Action enhancements enable easy repositioning even without stealth.

I suggest pairing Astarion with characters who can consistently generate Advantage – like through Faerie Fire spells or tanky allies occupying foes up-close while Astarion launches devastating sneak attacks. But recruiting him risks allying with his sinister motivations lurking beneath the surface…

Signature Abilities

  • Sneak Attack – Extra damage against distracted/nearby enemies
  • Cunning Action – Disengage/Dash/Hide bonus action
  • Vampiric Charm – Mind control conversations

Minthara [Paladin|Oath of Conquest]

Minthara portrait

Race: Drow
Class: Paladin
Oath: Conquest

Recruited: Act 2 Goblin Camp (Destroy Druid Grove)

Minthara draws strength from fear and subjugation – heavily armored and wielding divine magics to devastate groups while resisting enemy actions. Her presence demanding submission.

I only recommend including the tyrant Minthara if you’re embracing evil. She flatly rejects working alongside anyone defending the downtrodden, approving acts of cruelty. Without kind souls like Wyll or swamp Druid Halsin to balance the dynamic, a party with Minthara quickly turns monstrous…

Signature Equipment & Tactics

  • Terrifying enemies with menacing attacks
  • Heavy armor & shield for resilience
  • Divine Smite – Exploding weapon strikes

Halsin [Druid|Moon Circle]

Halsin portrait

Race: Wood Elf
Class: Druid
Circle: Moon

Recruited: Act 2 (After Saving Refugees Quest)

As an experienced Wood Elf Druid, Halsin excels at shaping the battlefield with entangling vines, walls of fire, and storm magics while polymorphing into beasts for close combat. His healing spells also offer excellent sustain when exploring without long rests.

I suggest pairing Halsin with younger characters who can benefit from his centuries of wisdom guiding their actions. But his principled stand against the goblin threat may not mesh with brashBone characters like scoundrel thief Astarion.

Signature Abilities & Spells

  • Wild Shape – Morph into various powerful beasts
  • Call Lightning/Flaming Sphere – Repeated AoE spells
  • Cure Wounds/Lesser & Healing Word – Direct healing

Minsc & Boo [Ranger|Beast Master]

Minsc and Boo portrait

Race: Human
Class: Ranger
Conclave: Beast Master

Available: Act 2 (Complete "Calling of the Song" Quest)

Veteran Baldur‘s Gate hero Minsc brings his trusty animal companion Boo the hamster along for more whimsical antics. He likely fills a durable melee combat role while directing Boo to surgically harass enemies.

But precisely how Minsc‘s abilities manifest remains unknown for now…regardless, count on humorous exchanges emerging between the unhinged Ranger and more serious companions like duty-driven Lae‘zel.

Minsc‘s gear and skills will be updated once additional details emerge from future Baldur‘s Gate 3 patches. Check back soon!

Jaheira [Druid|Moon Circle]

Jaheira portrait

Race: Half-Elf
Class: Druid
Circle: Moon

Available: Act 2 (Complete "Where‘s Wyll" Quest)

As another classic Baldur‘s Gate companion, Jaheira seems suited for druidic shapechanging and nature magics akin to Halsin. Details remain scarce, but Jaheira likely operates best alongside rugged Rangers or slippery Rogues on covert missions matching her Harper agent expertise.

Like with Minsc, Jaheira‘s exact Baldur‘s Gate 3 implementation awaits future reveals by Larian Studios. But for now, know her moon magics and expanded backstory should allow unique new experiences.

Once Baldur‘s Gate 3 full release nears and Jaheira becomes playable, this guide will update with her finalized stats, abilities, and specializations to reference.
