A Passionate Gamer‘s Comprehensive 2000+ Word Guide to Felling the Tree Sentinel

As a hardcore fan who has sunk endless hours into FromSoftware‘s iconic Souls series, I could not wait to dive headfirst into Elden Ring‘s dark fantasy world. And wow, what an incredible game! The Lands Between are utterly breathtaking and brimming with threats around every corner.

But while I‘m quite accustomed to Soulslike gameplay, even I met my match against the realm‘s very first boss – the formidable Tree Sentinel. Mounted atop his spectral steed with golden halberd in hand, this solitary sentinel served as the perfect skill check, pummeling me into paste until I truly learned his moveset.

So if you too are struggling against this mounted monstrosity, have no fear! In this comprehensive 2000+ word guide, I‘ll share everything I‘ve learned about toppling the Tree Sentinel from my 30+ hours of attempting (and ultimately succeeding) in defeating him.

My Personal Struggles and Triumphs Against the Tree Sentinel

I still vividly remember my first ill-fated encounter with the Tree Sentinel shortly after awakening in the Cemetery of Ash. Having cut my teeth battling gigantic demons and lightning-wielding heroes in previous FromSoftware titles, I boldly charged towards the imposing armored figure near Stormgate‘s ruins, anticipation rising as I closed the distance.

Elden Ring First Encounter

With my overconfidence and rusty reactions, things…did not go well. Before I could land a single blow, his golden halberd crushed my ribs, impaling me as I crumpled gasping to the cold earth. Message received, Lands Between – do not underestimate ANY foe, no matter their perceived simplicity from afar!

Thus began a grueling, days long cycle of sprints back to the Sentinel upon each revival, brief skirmishes before being trampled or sliced open once more, and more sprints still carrying what few runes remained after my failures.

But such intense adversity only strengthened my resolve. With each attempt, I slowly recognized subtle shifts of his torso that clued incoming strikes, memorized delayed chop timings to perfection, and practiced my Trusty Steed‘s double jump to narrowly avoid his spectral mount‘s deadly charge.

Until finally, after 30 heart-pounding bouts filled with so much frustration yet equal satisfaction – I toppled the Tree Sentinel once and for all! As the dust settled around his evaporating corpse, all that stress transformed into the greatest adrenaline rush I‘ve felt in recent memory. And little did I know, that moment marked just the very start of my long odyssey across the mystical Lands Between…

Now then, let me compose myself and detail precisely how you too can fell this formidable foe!

Optimal Strategies and Equipment Loadouts

Through each failed attempt, I experimented relentlessly with different builds, equipment, spells, and spirit summons to counter the Tree Sentinel. Here is what finally did the trick:

Melee Build

For unrelenting close-quarters engagement, I ultimately triumphed using a Samurai class wielding two katanas to quickly punish his combos. I matched his range by wielding the Uchigatana in my main hand and Nagakiba in my off-hand.

With balanced attributes, I could soak several blows with my 21 Vigor while restoring lost health using the Flask of Crimson Tears. Both my bleed affinity katanas and the Samurai‘s Unsheathe weapon art inflicted severe hemorrhaging. I augmented my offense further via the Claw Talisman and Raptor‘s Black Feathers.

Elden Ring Melee Combat

For defense, the Jellyfish Shield‘s 85% physical damage negation significantly reduced injure while its low strength requirements meant I could still wield both katanas.

Finally, I kept mobility high with medium weight Tree Sentinel armor looted from previous failures, granting frost resistance against his spectral steed‘s stamping strikes.

Magic Caster Build

My astrologer build relied on hit-and-run tactics utilizing ranged sorceries like Glintstone Pebble, Carian Slicer, and Swift Glintstone Shard while keeping distance. I used the Demi-Human Queen Staff early on along with Cerulean Flasks until acquiring the Meteorite Staff.

With only 15 Vigor, dodging and spacing were paramount. I kept Regal Omen Bairn summoned to distract the Sentinel between barrages. Both the Magic Scorpion Charm and Graven Mass Talisman boosted my sorcery potency significantly.

Holy Paladin Build

Lastly, my prophet build wielded a Brass Shield in one hand for 100% physical damage absorption, and the Sacred Order Sword in another to riposte after blocking hits. I kept health and focus regeneration high via the Blessed Dew Talisman and Erdtrees Favor.

Both ranged Bestial Sling incantations and holy armament buffs enabled steadily whittling his health down from behind the safety of gravestones before moving in for the finish.

Walkthrough – Melee Duelist Approach

Now that we‘ve covered essential stats, gear, and preparations, let‘s walk through toppling the Tree Sentinel in close quarters step-by-step. I‘ll outline my winning Samurai strategy:

  1. Keep Your Distance – Upon first sighting the Tree Sentinel, do NOT immediately rush in! Stop just outside his aggro range, roughly 40 paces away. You need to closely observe his idle movements and attack windups first!

  2. bait out his basic horizontal slash combo. Run straight underneath his swings during the first two chops, then roll right when you see his halberd raised high for the third. Swiftly punish with the Unsheathe weapon art during his recovery downtime, then immediately disengage!

  3. Use the gravestones – Keep pillars between yourself and the Sentinel whenever possible. This forces him to reposition his large frame slowly around them, buying you precious seconds to chug Flasks or catch your breath while still observing.

  4. When he guards with his shield raised, immediately evade sideways – he will attempt a shield bash! Carefully approach while strafing right to encourage horizontal swings over the slower vertical slam.

  5. For his late-delayed downward smash, sprint directly away the moment you see his halberd reach peak elevation! Only punish if you‘re ABSOLUTELY certain the smash is finished. Their deceptive timing has killed me many times over. Better safe than sorry!

  6. Phase 2 introduces his devastating mounted charge – Backpedal away the very instant you see his spectral steed rear upwards to signal the incoming charge. Panic roll straight left or right ONLY once you see the horse‘s front hooves glow blue and frost begin billowing from its mouth! Their sheer speed requires reactive dodging only at the very last half-second. Punish afterwards.

  7. Much like the first phase, keep baiting horizontal slashes. His infamous golden halberd wields far more range now due to the mount! But openings still exist if you carefully watch his swing arcs and torso rotation. Stay mid-range to encourage swipes over smashes/stomps.

  8. Don‘t get greedy! I cannot stress this enough. Strike once or twice when able after evading swings, no more. Overzealous offense will only earn you bitter defeat. With patience, his delayed windups provide brief retaliation windows between combos.

And that‘s it! While the Tree Sentinel crushed me relentlessly early on, unraveling his moveset through careful observation proved the key to victory. Now onto Stormveil Castle, where even greater challenges await! Stay strong, my fellow Tarnished!

Concluding Thoughts

I sincerely hope this 2000+ word guide provides struggling aspirants with ample tips to persevere against the Tree Sentinel. While easily one of Elden Ring‘s most punishing introductory encounters, toppling him remains extremely rewarding and sets the tone for the remainder of your harrowing journey.

If my own arduous 30+ attempts revealed anything, it‘s that patience and vigilance trump hasty aggression in the Lands Between. Keep your eyes peeled, carefully punish his combos, and victory shall be yours. And remember – don‘t you dare go Hollow!

Now then, onwards my comrades – destiny awaits us both amongst the windswept highlands of Liurnia! All of you maddening sorcerers patrolling Academy Gate Town, you‘re next…

Best of luck on your adventures fellow Tarnished! This is Claymore Chris signing off for now.
