A few months ago I was teaching a SharePoint class in Tallahassee, Florida. I checked my email after I got checked into the hotel and I was surprised by a Google News Alert. (I have set up a Google News Alert for “Ricky Spears” so I’m notified whenever my name appears in the news or whenever someone references me in a blog post.) This one indicated that a man named Ricky Spears had kidnapped a 14-year-old girl in Florida and the two were on the run from the law. Just in case this story went national, I emailed several friends to let them know that: Yes, I am in Florida, but No, this isn’t me.

I really expected the local authorities would come knocking on my door once they discovered that a Ricky Spears had checked into a hotel and rented a car in Tallahassee. I was surprised that they didn’t. Then I expected that I would have a difficult time flying out ofthe state. I was really surprised when I got through the TSA station with no more problems than usual too.

All this has made a funny story to share with people. I thought that it was all behind me until last week when Ricky Spears escaped from jail and I started getting news alerts about him again. It all came to a head this morning when I received a news alert (screenshot below) with the headlines: “Manhunt for Spears and Dixon Intensify,” “Kidnapping Suspect Spotted,” and “Escaped Inmate Spotted Near Munson.” Ricky Spears showed up in bold text in all the article summaries. But what really added insult to injury for me was the link at the bottom to my LinkedIn Profile.

My wife found this ad in the classifieds section of our local newspaper yesterday. I guess that they want to make sure that the candidates don’t stink up the warehouse. Kind of makes you wonder what the previous person that had this job was like. I cringe at the thought. This might be a good time for Letterman to swoop in and change the “b” to an “m”.

If you enjoy funny classifieds you might also enjoy my post from January 4, 2005 called, “Neutering?“

My lovely wife Sandy found this cute kit that allows you to put a face on a tree. Sandy loves feeding wild birds so we placed these facial features near some of her bird feeders. The tree reminds me of the Ents from The Lord of the Rings.

For those of you who aren’t LOTR fans, Wikipedia explains Ents as, “Ents are a fictional race from J. R. R. Tolkien’s fantasy world of Middle-earth. These Ents are very different from traditional Ents, appearing as humanoid trees. They appear to have been inspired by the talking trees of many of the world’s folklores.”

This just goes to show that not everyone should be allowed to use spell check.
