Emails to Senators Dole and Burr

I just sent the following email to my two Senators, Elizabeth Dole and Richard Burr, here in North Carolina. If I get a response, I’ll let you know, but I’m not expecting to hear anything. I had to do something to make my voice heard though.

 Senator Dole,

I was saddened to hear that you voted in favor of HR 6304–to amend FISA to allow the government to spy on citizen’s private communications and to grant immunity to the telecoms that assist with this.

I see this bill as a direct violation of the 4th amendment. It removes freedoms from the American people and grants power to the government in such a way that American citizens have no recourse.

I am a registered republican, very conservative, and I voted for you. I don’t believe I can ever cast another vote for you again after this. If we are to believe that the terrorists hate America because of our freedoms, and the people we elect remove our freedoms because of the terrorists, then the terrorists won.

When you took your office, you swore to “support and defend the Constitution.” I would like to know how you see this bill as supporting or defending the Constitution as you swore to do, especially the 4th amendment.

I’m in agreement on this one, Ricky. I think the word “conservative” has been hijacked recently, BTW. I’m a conservative when it comes to: the environment (I want to conserve and protect it), our hard-fought rights (I want to keep them), finances (having a balanced budget and living within our means), our behavior (don’t torture, act like you want others to act), etc. Sadly, many self-proclaimed “conservatives” that so many people vote for act against these. I don’t get it…

Matthew – I was really excited when Ron Paul was running for President. I think he brought a lot of publicity for traditional conservative values. I’m not happy with either of my choices for President now, especially since they both voted for this bill. At this point, I’ll probably still write in Ron Paul–I think it’s a better way of making my voice heard than voting for whoever seems to be the lesser of the two evils of Obama and McCain.

Have you read Ron Paul’s The Revolution: A Manifesto? I wish every American would read that book. He reveals so much about where America has strayed from our original values over the last 80 years or so. I fear that if we don’t get back to our Constitutional roots soon, it will be too late and all the American people will regret it.

I received responses from both Burr and dole via Snail Mail. I’m sure I got the same form letter that everyone else received. To summarize them, they each indicate they did what they thought was best. I thought both letters were incredibly lacking in support for the specific questions I raised to them. If anyone is interested in seeing their actual response, let me know and I’ll post copies of the letters here.
