I read this post when it first came out and have been munching on it ever since. I find that I'm especially aware of the times when I'm ready to say "I don't have time" or "I'll try to." I guess those two have been the ones I've used the most. "I can't" has also been coming to mind, although that isn't time related. Thanks for the great post, Ricky!

This post can really make one think about how he or she goes about his or her life. I'm really more of a "I'm Busy" person and I realize that saying this phrase over and over again can actually make me seem busier than I really am.

There've even been stickers and postcards in the Netherlands with "Ja, maar" (our version of "yes, but") with a big red line through it :-)

Some magazine started a crusade to eliminate it. At least in my company they're now alert on it :-)

Reinout - You're absolutely right! I should have added that one to the list because it's another one I've been working on. Only for me it's, "Yeah, but". When many of us are presented with an opportunity or have a new idea, we often look for ways that the opportunity or idea will fail by telling ourselves, "Yeah, but..." By avoiding that phrase, I'm forced to look for the positive things that can come from an experience rather than the negative.

That "spend time" one is good.

What I've been trying to remove: ", but". "But" negates what comes before it, though you often don't mean it that way.

"You look great, but you second button is loose" gets mentally translated to "You don't look great" :-)
