My Weekly Compass Tiddler

The central part of a FranklinCovey system is the Weekly Compass. This is a tool that you update during the weekly review and plan. In a paper based system it is a strip of paper that is used to mark the current day. As you plan your week, you note what you plan to do for yourself—i.e. sharpen the saw—and what your most important tasks are for each role you have.

Here is how the TiddlyWiki markup looks (I’ve removed a lot of items for this example):

!Date: Week#49 - 12/04/05 through 12/10/05
!!!!Role: Sharpen the Saw
*''Physical:'' Avoid sweets and walk each morning @@color(purple): @@
*''Social/Emotional:'' Have lunch with Bert @@color(purple): @@
*''Mental:'' Read //Organizing from the Inside Out// each morning @@color(purple): @@
*''Spiritual:'' Read //With Christ in the School of Prayer// each morning @@color(purple): @@

!!!!Role: Web Designer
*Design Client ABC site for approval. @@color(purple): @@

!!!!Role: Web Programmer
*Mindmap XYZ Program @@color(purple): @@
*Write Stored Procedures for XYZ Program @@color(purple): @@

!!!!Role: Husband
*Give Sandy a massage @@color(purple): @@

!!!!Role: Sunday School Teacher
*Read part of lesson each day @@color(purple): @@
*Finalize lesson plan by Saturday @@color(purple): @@

!!!!Role: Blogger
*Post five new articles @@color(purple): @@

And here is how it looks in use (reduced by 75%):

The Weekly Compass is the default tiddler that I see when I open my TiddlyWiki. This keeps me reminded of what is actually most important and helps keep me from getting distracted by the urgent but less important things. I also review it as I do my daily planning. It is part of my processing check list each evening.

You are probably wondering what all the extra “purple” tags are for. As I am doing my weekly review, I evaluate how successful I was at “sharpening the saw” and accomplishing my big rocks. Before I move the Weekly Compass to my archive TiddlyWiki, I place notes about those things in green. This helps me to see where I need improvement. Those notes look like this:

Thanks for publishing the GTD TiddlyWiki material. I had looked at it a while a back and wanted so much to use it. Now I have one for Home and for Work. I’m getting a good workout with the one at work including the tickler.

The Compass Tiddler is really great. I’ll have to figure out my Roles and Goals and get that going-especially at Home. I’ve been feeling the need to incorporate the 7 Habits which worked well for me many years ago until my life got complex and I let go of it all. Now I think it is time to have a look at the higher level and that Compass look perfect for the task.
